What Is Available?Shared AccommodationUsually a single room (furnished or unfurnished) in a flat or house often shared with other students. Facilities and expenses such as rent, electricity, gas, phone and bond are usually shared. Average cost for rent only is $140-$200 per week.Room & FacilitiesUsually a furnished room and use of facilities in a private home. You have use of the kitchen to do your own cooking and expenses such as gas & electricity are often included in the rent. Average cost is $140-$200 per week.Full BoardUsually a furnished room and use of facilities in a private home (often with a family). Breakfast and dinner are provided and sometimes lunch. Average cost is $190-$250 per week which includes all expenses.Properties to RentFurnished and unfurnished flats and houses are also listed. Depending on the location, number of rooms and general condition of the property, rent will vary considerably. For example, rental prices for a one bedroom flat may vary between $280 and $400 per week. When renting a flat or house one is usually required to sign a six month lease. For unfurnished premises a bond of four weeks' rent is payable before you move in. Telephone, gas and electricity bonds are also required.Where Do I Start?Consider which type of accommodation best suits you.Do you want a family environment? - Full Board. Are you looking to share with a group of people your own age? - Shared Accommodation. Would you like a more private environment in a home with a couple or a single person? - Room & Facilities. Or do you want to be totally independent in your own house or flat? - Properties to Rent. Whatever the case, you need to think seriously about your choice of accommodation and whether it will be conducive to study.Work out how much you can comfortably afford to pay.You don't want to be stressed by financial problems while you are studying. Make sure that the cost of your accommodation, including food and expenses, is easily managed within your budget.Try to find accommodation within about 30 minutes travelling from the University.The suburbs to look at are: Kingsford, Kensington, Randwick, Coogee, Maroubra, Pagewood, Hillsdale, Eastlakes, Mascot, Rosebery, Surry Hills, and Darlinghurst. A bit further but still suitable are: Waverley, Bondi, Bondi Junction, Woollahra, Paddington and Matraville.How The Service Works1. Visit the Accommodation Services Central OfficeLook at the listing cards on the notice boards for suitable accommodation.Write down the details of the listings you are interested in.Then contact the householder.Questions you should ask are as follows: What is the rent per week? Are gas & electricity included? Are there any extra charges? Must I pay rent in advance? Is there a bond? How much? Can I come & see the room? Some points to remember:Arrange to meet the householder. Check that you have the right address. Be punctual for your meeting. If for any reason you are unable to keep your appointment, please phone the householder and tell him/her. |
